Midchester
will suprise you. That’s a fact, for a start.
They have toured
Austria & Germany, released a live DVD, produced great videos, were
on radio and tv,
and made a name for themselves. Sounds easy? Try doing it without a
label and without a single penny; and in the pre-MySpace-aera,
moreover. That’s impressive, isn’t it?
You will find yourself listening to their album or watching them
performing, asking yourself why it took you so long to discover them.
Because Midchester is by no
means the common „yet-another-local-Indie-Rock-band“.
The name might give away what music the boys grew up with and their
place of residence would surely make them „a Vienna
local“.
What you will feel at that particular moment is the
„Yeeeah!“. Shake, move, flip, rock. Every song is
based on
finest songwriting and excellent playing. Paul’s
guitar solos are touching perfection, which only enables Stuard
to add another bit of that „feeelin‘“
(rock’n’rolling of course obligatory). But then
comes the
icing on the cake: Mister Max
drumming and Mister Niki‘s
bass guitar.
So
where did their story start?
The story could start with two guys meeting in a small town, sharing a
fag and discovering the same passion for the Manchester sounds.
Consequently, picking up guitars, learning how to play and years later
deciding to dedicate their lives to music.
Or it can only really start years later when they run into another two
guys with somewhat same story and start creating something that will
some months later blow your mind when seeing them performing in
Vienna’s Chelsea in 2005.
But the story actually starts only now. Right now.
Their album will finally be out in spring 2009 and the songs on it show
anything else but cluelessness. The songs have matured and developed
their own life and soul.
At the moment the guys are looking for a label, a distributor, a
promotion and booking agency,
so let’s summarize it – they are looking for people
who
love their music and take the next step toward stardom together.
And for those who haven’t seen them live,
this is your chance – Midchester are playing Panic @ Flex on
Friday, Decemeber 5th (Stagetime 0:00)! Be there or be square!
The future lies somewhere in the past and the present is bright. And
the sound? The sound comes from the underground. What else.
Yeah yeah yeah, we have finally made it to
have a fine soul rock’n’roll band among our Faves
Raves. Amazing!
But of course we wouldn’t feature just any soul band. We are
talking about a VERY fine one here: THE ATTENTION!
from Vienna.
The Vienna’s hipsters know “how to”
really well.
They “how to”: -
rhythm & blues, -
twist & shout -
shizm & rizm -
dress to impress -
shake & stirr
and of course many other things that are only up to you to discover and
fall in love with.
For me the actual lovely thing about The Attention! is
the fact that they were not always the shimmynizing band
they are now.
Before jumping into their fancy attires, they were smashing the guitars
and rocking it true in the infamous band KING
TIGER. After Bomba,
the bassist left King Tiger to focus on the
rock’n’roll band Low
Down High, the others decided it was the right moment to turn
things upside down.
The rough guitars were exchanged by twistful blues, the loud drums with
shouting beats and the straight 70’s rock sounds with perfect
soul melodies. And of course, the long hairs were cut, the beards
shaved and the tight bootcut jeans exchanged with tailor-cut hipsters.
From that moment on The
Attention! dedicated themselves to their newly discovered
love for the fine soul music.
And they are dong it damn right!
They are now in great company with The
(Incredible) Staggers from Graz which they will accompany
on their next visit in
the UK in January.
The
Attention! are ready to roll over your town and will make
you celebrate, whether you put on your dancing shoes or not!
You know what is the best thing about our
Local Faves ?
They are all different.
Not because they might be coming from different parts of
Austria, or because they are early twens or late teens. They are all different music-wise
and that is something that makes us RockMISSes proud – and
gives you,
our dear readership, a chance to look in other corners of Austrian
music scene and discover its diversity.
Now enough of long introductions, we present you our Local Faves of
October: XENESTHIS
from Burgenland
The band fronted by lovely Katrin
proves that metal core does not need to come from USA to be
contemporary, and that strong, loud Scandinavian melodies, do not
necessarily need to be played by long & black-haired tall man
to
sound exciting.
Xenesthis combine the best of Arch
Enemy, Slayer,
In
Flames, all the way to the “new metal
core” of Linkin
Park and Korn.
Still, they manage to remain original
and authentic
– and full of pure rock’n’roll
energy!
The
Rock Boys:
(Andreas, Michael, Raffael and Thomas)
And the
Rock Girl:
(Katrin)
We
love Katrin’s voice and her performance on the stage. Somehow
she seems
angelic and all girly – but then delivers an awesomely
energetic rock
performance.
But how is being a girl in a gang of four metal guys?
RockMISSes
introduce the ultimate five “girls rock”-questions.
a) What's a girl's role in such a manly bunch? To
cook and to do the dishes. To
be honest: We are all musicians. So most of the time I don’t
even
realize that I’m the only girl surrounded by men - as long as
we don’t
talk about sex. And if
we do, it creates an amazing tension between us and that inspires us to
write good music.
b) How do you deal with all the flowers you get from your groupies? If
I’m sober I give them to boys I fancy. If I
am drunk I jump on them.
c) What is the most romantic thing you've experience with the band so
far? When
we were heading for a concert and all of us had to pee near the road,
because there was no bathroom near by, my drummer didn’t go
with the
other boys, but crouch down beside me near a tree and said:
“I don’t
want you to be lonely while peeing, just because you are the only girl
in the band.” That
was cute! Well,
add to question one: as long as we don’t talk about sex - and
pee.
d) Three things you don't want to miss on stage. Simple: My
band, water, my voice.
e) Your personal favourite songs / your Fave Rave ? There
are way to many bands I really admire, so it would be unfair to
highlight one. But if you have time check out “Time of the
Season” by
The Zombies and “In the Light” by Led Zeppelin. For
me these are two of
the most underestimated songs in music history. But
the people who really rock my world are the people I love –
it sounds kitschy but it is true!
There is a band from Vienna that makes
this
good old rock'n'roll music. And they are exactly what Vienna has been
missing, say RockMISSes and proudly introduce you to LOW-DOWN
HIGH from Vienna.
(..looks good on a dancefloor)
It’s sweaty and dirty
rock’n’roll music, that’s
what Low-Down High is about. And when they call their music “action rock”
these guys know exactly what they are talking about. It’s
because
they’ve been making music their whole lives, because they
played
in rock bands before and because being part of the hard-core music
scene in their early days they played the toughest stages in Europe (or
at least the dirtiest).
Bomba, Simon, Chewie and Robert
But
don’t get us wrong – Low-Down High is not a
hard-core band.
That was years ago. And since those days their music (taste) changed.
Today, it is the Scandinavian r'n'r-scene-sound where Simon, Chewie,
Bomba and Robert musically belong. But please not the emphasis on the
word “musically” in the previous sentence. Because
one
thing is for sure: Low-Down High is clearly a Viennese band and that
are no rocks or rolls that will make them deny that fact.
Last year the band released their first EP, with 5 songs of “pure
rock’n’roll turmoil”
which was released on September 7th, 2007. The EP gained impressive
attention from the local and German press and put the band on stage
with many r’n’r-maestros.
(live in Wiesen 2008)
The last stage presence was just a week ago, when Low-Down High
successfully opened the second day of the Wiesen's "Two Days a Week"
festival. Now the boys are back in their rehearsal room that they share
with the awesome 60s-beat-band from Vienna- The Attention!(--> more about these
guys in the upcoming months).
In Januray they plan to go to studio to record the debut album.
RockMISSes can't wait to hear more. And we can't wait to see LDH play
more gigs and festivals, as 2009 becomes their year.
(aftershow-madness Wiesen 2008)
The
famous-five-rock’n’roll-questions-to survival:
1.
"Define party"
A party could either be a political organisation or a group of
travellers, if you will. Another thing that comes to our minds includes
loud music, people passing out, broken furniture, semi-naked chicks,
upset neighbours and the likes... lovely.
2:
„What was a fun thing that you will never do again?“
If we'd tell you we'd have to kill you.
3:
„Who is your bands Fave Rave (=a rock-God)?“
We always loved THE HELLACOPTERS for they a) rule supreme and b) have
been a big inspiration for us forming a band (although we don't exactly
sound like them, we think).
4:
„If you could chose, with which band would you go on a
world-tour now?“
Any band that accepts that we - as a matter of fact - always get more
booze and attract more babes.
5:
„What is the best kept secret about your band?“
We are from planet ackhhnettan and are on a mission to enslave mankind.
No, we were just joking. the planet is actually not called ackhhnettan,
but uckhhnettan. Treat this as confidental, though... otherwise it
wasn't a secret anymore.
Before RockMISSes start to introduce the
Local Fave of June, a little excursus:
all the local bands we introduced so far were either from Vienna (or
surroundings) or from Styria. How comes? Where are all those bands from
the other parts of Austria? There have to be some, right? You
now
could say that it is because we are based in Vienna and of course the
Viennese bands are those who we hear the most about but to revise that
there are those amazing bands from Styria – like our Local
Fave
of June. So our lovely readers, please let us know about other bands to
feature in the next months.
Back to
our LOCAL
FAVE
of JUNE – it is a pleasure to introduce to you a
band that is
committed to punkrock/pop/hardcore, may RockMISSes introduce:
Defcon
are based in East Styria and consist of six guys with different musical
background and taste who all played in various bands for years. In the
end of 2005 their shared love for punk rock got them to form the band.
So you have Manuel
“Mani” and Pierre,
responsible for the singing, ok one is singing, the other one is
responsible for the shouting/screaming parts; Pierre is also the
Internet guy in the band, while Mani is the graphic designer and the
cashier. Christian
"Chris" and Jürgen
“Hü”
on the guitars are driving force behind the song writing, and Christian
is the organiser, responsible for booking, coordination, advertising
and so on. Then you have Daniel
“Dani” on bass and last but not least Mathias
“Ruppi” on the drums, the last two are
the all-rounder and help wherever help is needed.
You
might wonder what the name
is about? Defcon are the national security
levels of the USA, it is a measure of the activation and readiness
level of the United States Armed Forces. (for those who are interested in knowing
more about that go here)
The release of their first EP in the summer of 2006 was the first step
to conquer the Styrian and Austrian music scene. Now two years later,
lots and lots of gigs later, and a ever growing fan base they released
their debut album Neon Nights,
with that they prove they are much more than just another punk rock
band – they entertain us with their own mixture of pop, punk
and
hardcore. Their myspace
site is really popular; their songs have
already been played over 110.000 times by now, wow!
Neon Nights – this are 11 songs
that will colour your life “neon”, that might sound
scary,
but don’t be afraid, it has nothing to do with any 80ies
fashion
or nurave. These songs will entertain you throughout the nights and
make your nights and days even rockier. Neon Nights has a little
something for everyone, from typical punk rock anthems to nearly
hardcore songs, songs to sing along, to dance to, and a ballade (10-80 (The Cold),
what an amazing song!). But all those different styles work together
and are combined to a great record that you will just love.
The guys just shot the video for
the first single of Neon
Nights - King
of the World – you can find photos from the
video shoot here!
On June 27th a huge video
premiere party is planned in their hometown,
where Jerx and 100% Cotton will celebrate with them. But the people of
Vienna don’t have to be sad, there will be a Viennese
premiere
party as well - at the Chilibox Party at the Schikaneder on July 3rd.
After playing a few shows in Germany in June, the boys take over
Austria and play one festival after the other over the summer. For the
dates just go to their myspace site.
So
what will the future
bring for this band? RockMISSes
unfortunately
don’t have psychic powers, but we know that they deserve that
their dreams come true. And what are those dreams – just play
live, write new songs, enjoy their music, make their music known even
outside Austria and then a huge
nightliner tour, maybe even in the US. So guys, you know that you have
to invite RockMISSes to be your tour managers then, right?
RockMISSes’
verdict – Defcon rocks!
And it is about time that the rest of the world realises that!
When
we first started doing the Local
Fave section, they were among the first bands on our mind. In our
opinion there is not another band that would better represent - image
and sound wise - this fine rock city of Vienna.
One and a half years ago Freud
started reheasing in their practice space in Vienna's
WUK. Back then
they didn't even have a name, let alone gigs or a record deal in mind.
Every now and then I would bump into Axel,
the frontman, and ask him how the band was doing, and all he would say
would be: "Great!".
Now, I have known some musicians in my life to know that this answer is
not to be blindly trusted. But there was a certain twinkle in his smile
and a little "It's a lot of fun" that he would add
at the end, that made me trust him that the band is off to some higher
grounds.
Of course, that wasn't all: Freud
is a band that came to life when the legendary Vienna's mod band The
05 decided to call it a day. Instead of
hitting the walls with The 05, Oliver,
Axel, Jürgen
& Ochiro hit the pubs and found Paul
(the "English guy") and John
(the "Swedish guy"), two other talented and experienced musicians. They
booked a few rehearsals and from one day to the other, Freud was here
as if they've never been anywhere else.
This is how Erdem
Tunakan must have felt when he decided to open up a new
branch of his elektro label Cheap Records,
just to be able to host the band Freud. Cheap Record Rocks is now home
to the band, while Wohnzimmer Promotionis taking care of the other side of the
business.
But
to me it seems that no one really talks about business here: everyone
involved seems simply in love with this band and having a good portion
of fun. That twinkle with which everything started has spread like a
disease.
That
is what you can hear in Freud's music: it's easy-going, popping
&
rocking and making you smile - and twinkle - like there is no
tommorow. Popping rock'n'roll is what the
band calls it, and that's exactly what it is.
So one year later after their first rehearsal Freud
released their first single - Sex You Again as a
double A-side 7-inch together with Beep That Girl
- and the single reached the Nr.2 position of the Austrian
Indie Charts.
Now they have a second single coming out mid of May:
another double A-side: Kiss me 4 times with Plus
Minus.
LIVE: May 24th @ Rote
Bar / Volkstheater Single/Video Release-Show for Kiss
Me 4 Times Two half-hour sets of Freud live and
Special DJ sets (John Megill (FM4), Erdem
Tunakan)
RockMISSes say: off to the Nr.1!
P.S:
A little lesson in German and a bit of Viennese charms for the the
non-German-speaking crows:
Freud = Sigmund Freud
FreudE = happiness, joy
FreuNd = a (boy)friend
Here
they are: our Local Faves of April. Like all the others before this
band deserves your attention. Five extremely talented guys from just
outside Vienna, Perchtoldsdorf to be exactly who dedicate themselves to
Scremo / Emo / Punkrock.
(We think
the band hates these genre description as much as we do, but just to
give you an idea what they sound like there need to be some
categorisation):
Miss BB’s first encounter
with From Dawn To Fall was in the
beginning of 2007 when they played the Local
Heroes band contest. Sharing the bass player with Occupied
(whom I really love) I was curious but actually I did not expect a lot.
BUT I was blown away by their performance.
Within the last year theirmusic evolved greatly, they deepened their
own style, wrote amazing song, played lots of shows and built up a
loyal ever growing fan base. Finally their debut record The
Beginning is out NOW!
But let’s get to know the band first.
Founded in early 2006 by Daniel
(guitar) and Clemens (drums), From Dawn To Fall
recruited the remaining members Stefan (vocal), Johannes (vocal,
guitar) and Philip (bass) from local bands, allowing the band to draw
experience from a wide range of musical styles.
It is the blend of aggressive, yet
melodic guitars, two-voiced vocals, frenzied drumming and emotional
lyrics that create the band’s distinctive sound.
Stoffl’s voice gives me the chills, and in combination with
Jojo’s perfect harmonising additional vocals it is even
getting better. The amazing guitar riffs by Dany and Jojo backed up by
Philip’s passionate bass playing and the
powerful drums by Clemens make this band unique.
To name
just a few, but the biggest gigs they played so far: Last summer they
opened the Frequency
Festival and were invited to be opener for the Taste of Chaos Tour last November
in Vienna.
The
Beginning, yes it is the beginning of something, something
huge,… this record is just a start, and the guys more than
deserve that this is the start of their careers as rockstars.
The record includes the songs we
all know and love from their live shows and some songs that
aren’t that familiar. It is a document of what the guys
created in the last two years, and shows their musical abilities and
their talent in song writing. GRATULATION
to Chrisi (singer in No
More Encore and drummer in Occupied)
who produced, mixed, recorded the record, good job!!! oh and not to
forget Lucas who produced the voice and make Stoffl’s and
Jojo’s voice sound even better! And of course Filip and
Bernhard of The Arcadia Agency whose dedicated support brought the band
to where it is now.
And what is
it with Perchtoldsdorf? How can such a small town give us so many
(multi)talented musicians and amazing bands?
You can listen to tracks from their
record on their myspace
site, and RockMISSes strongly recommend doing so.
Their first ever show was played at
the Hyrtl Haus in Perchtoldsdorf and that was where they celebrated the
release of their debut record The Beginning.
They invited befriended bands Showyourteeth
(who played their first show), One Match For My Existenceand Cheek
Dakota to perform as support and turn the
whole evening into a huge party. A sold out show, a packed venue, an
excited audience and fabulous bands – that’s
exactly what a release show should be like.
The stage all decorated in white matching the mainly white artwork of
the record (even their guitars and bass and the guys’ shirts
where white) From Dawn To Fall played the
perfect show, giving the audience exactly what they wanted and hoped
for.

in the next months - check their website
for details.
This
month's Local Fave band is literally big - there are 8 musicians and 2
back singers involved when this band hits the stage. They have energy
to fill out a stadion, they have fans another bands can only dream
about, and (as we are RockMISSes here) they are freakin' stylish!
They are the finest Austria has to offer in ska-punk-pop. Ladies and
gentlemen, let us introduce you to the nicest of the rock
families:
It is already a few years back
(2001) that Guadalajara won the "Austrian
Newcomer Band Contest" and made heads of Austria's music
lovers spin with the tongue-breaking name. Guada-what? Apart from that
their cover of Bob Geldofs' "Mondays" sounded like something
we were rather used to hear from far away California (think
Mighty Mighty Bosstones).
And then that size of 8 people in a band that gives every booker a cold
shiver...
From the first moment on, it was clear that something exciting was
happening here.
Time proved them right: they played hundreds of gigs in the past years
all around Austria and Europe and built a faithfull fanbase (and these
guys & gals are known for going crrrazy during their gigs!).
They worked on every single corner of the song-writing, their live
performance and the last-but-not-least their own personal style. And
now after exactly 4 years they are back with a great new album "Weapons
of Mass Seduction" (out on March, 1st).
Last
Friday, February 29th, they presented their new album at Vienna's WUK
with a fantastic live show. As intro, they showed the video for the
first single "Turn Up" (watch here), which is awesome! The
band presented all 12 songs of the new album and the audience loved it.
After 2 encores, some wicked crowd-surfs of the guitar-player Thomas,
sexy hip moves of the background singers, one sexy stage dance
of (trumpet & mastermind) Bernhard's sister, and a lot of "We
are so bloody happy to be here!", the band packed their bags and hit
the road.
There was another important day ahead of them - probably the most
important one - the homecoming in Graz.
There is no doubt about it: this band is off to some big ventures.
And 2008 is definitey their year. RockMISSes
are honoured to call them our LOCAL
FAVES of MARCH!
A
new month - new local faves; and this time to total different bands -
but both of them really special.
On the one hand we have a band from Graz with English lyrics - Killed by 9V Batteries,
and on the other hand a German singing band from Vienna - Minze.
Both have new singles out this month, both will play again in Vienna
this month (Killed by 9V Batteries - 19.2 / Fluc - Neil Young Tribute
Night, Minze - 13.2 / U4 - Single Presentation), both are amazing
artists and they both more than deserve to be Local Faves of the month.
(It would be strange to write in any other language but German about a
German singing band, just in case you wonder why it suddenly turns to
German,...)
Seriously, what was the first thing
you thought when you heard the name of this band? I first discovered Killed
by 9Volt Batteries in the myspace-calender of a friend who
happens to be the biggest Sonic
Youth fan I know, and was dazed by the name. What a bloody
great one!
And then the music on the bands myspace-player - my godness!
"Grunge-Noise" as you haven't heard it before in Austria. Or anywhere
near, if you ask me. These guys had a fan in me from the first second
on. I felt a bit like finding my old self, recognizing the melodic
tunes of Pavement and the amazing
noise-influence of their big rolemodels Sonic Youth - bands
that played a significant role also in my early teen days. But don't
let yourself be deceived: "the Batts" sound fresh and
they sound rebellious - musically, of course. The latter is necessary
coming from a small town where everyone is into Bon
Jovi-sounding-classic rock-crap, I guess. Apart from
that, the "9V death club" (which is another of many
nicknames this band has) freaking rock with a capital R. So it
is not surprising that Killed by 9volt Batteries were chosen to play at
the Eurosonic festival in Groningen
this January where they encountered great response from the European
press people.
Great music...but there is more: these guys are extremely nice and
interesting company, as Miss Ana could find out last Thursday while
chatting to them in their tourbus before the show in Arena Wien. (more
stories & pics to follow)
Long
story short: do us a favor - find them and love them!
New 7" single "how to
mute ourselves" (split single with Jolly Goods) on Siluh Records
Minze.

Miss D
As
January is such a dull and cold month in the rockin‘ city of
Vienna, RockMISSes have chosen two bands from Vienna who are most
likely to kick you out of the winter sleep, to wear the crown of the
Local Faves in January! They are ska, they are punk, they are fun and
these guys kick asses!
„This is sweet ska music
from Vienna town“ – yes it is.
Years ago, frontman Ben was playing the bass guitar and kept his mouth
shut on the stage. But things changed and Ben started singing
- and entertaining, and yes, that is what he does best. PBH Club became the
ska-fun-party-sensation of the Vienna scene. After playing like 500000
gigs and releasing their first records, it was only last year that they
won one of Austria’s biggest band contest and their
major debut „45 minutes of Urlaub“ was released in
October 07.
But it’s by far not all about Ben – don’t
get us wrong, it is the combination of people and their musical
influcences that make this band unique. Örni on guitar, the
organizing genius in this band who isn't scared to play
MissBB’s Hello Kitty guitar at live shows; nico.reed who
keeps on entertaining us with his bass and Poto on drums, who
keeps the rythm going that make us all dance. And last but not at all
least the amazing brass section that makes every party going.
Once you get to know the boys and see them playing live, you will love
them forever. So whatcha waiting for?
Just one
advice from MissBB – don’t party with the boys if
you have to get up in the morning; it is just impossible to get home at
a decent hour – well MissBB hardly ever managed it. They are
MissBB’s party heroes!
How many bands do you know that
have created their own definition of their music that actually makes
sense (and is not some superficial product of a bored music industry)?
I know one.
So make a wave to the SKUNK-ROCK-kings: Soupshop
from Vienna.
These guys are fun with the capital F – not only on the
stage. Dino / Mini / Jelio-entourage is the icing on every party cake
and Miss And has spent many outragiously funny evenings with these
boys. Oh, in case you are living in Vienna and you see the yellow
VW-bus passing by, be nice and wave to the guys
– it’s them behind the wheel.
Soupshop will be recording their new album in spring 2008 and that will
be the skunk-rock history. Get yourselves ready!
Q1: „Define
party“ Destroy the house, suck dry the
keg, enjoy the sighing of the girls.
Q2:
„What was a fun thing that you will never do again?“ Playing
to an audience of 400 Skinheads in Eastern Germany.
Q3:
„Who is your bands Fave Rave (=a rock-God)?“ Los
Autenticos Decadentes
Q4:
„If you could chose, with which band would you go on a
world-tour now?“ Rolling
Stones - what else?
Q5:
„What is the best kept secret about your band?“ One of
our better known secrets is that we never played an instrument live or
in the studio. Instead we do playbackshows with music previously
recorded by the Rolling Stones who personally casted us for a show band
'cause they can't play this kind of music with their own faces and
names. For legal reasons, obviously. By the way, Keith plays the
saxophone. There are three secret messages and one outright lie in this
text.
